“It is the intensity of the longing that does all the work.”

I didn’t grow up listening to Bob Sheppard on the radio, so my memories of him aren’t as strong as my memories of broadcasters like Ernie or Harry. I do remember hearing his voice the first time I went to Yankees Stadium, introducing the players as they came up to bat.

Through his simple, clear introductions, Bob made the players feel more real. He made them feel less like superstars we only got to see on TV, but like talented individuals that were stepping up to the plate (literally and metaphorically) to do their jobs — to entertain us all — in an extremely stressful, pressurized situation. When Bob introduced a player, it wasn’t about the fanfare and hoopla, but instead about focus and hard work.

With both George Steinbrenner and Bob Sheppard passing away earlier this week, the Yankees have lost an integral part of their recent history. With Bob’s passing, the sports world has lost one of the greatest announcers of all time, and a man that stood for all things clear, concise, and correct.

“The best things said come last. People will talk for hours saying nothing much and then linger at the door with words that come with a rush from the heart.”

I saw figs at the grocery store yesterday. Is it fig season already? I am craving some juicy, sticky figs today. Figs make me smile.

“The plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But, it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And, these qualities have little to do with success as our culture has defined it.”

I quite enjoyed this Ms. Pacman music video until the very end. There’s something sinister and very creepy about the way they decided to wrap it all up, it left me all uneasy.

“Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia. You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”

Gregory, on the Man’s Guide to Love:

Be long-suffering with people; you have to overlook people’s faults and not get offended easily. Love suffers long and is kind. You have to know and understand that people make mistakes, people aren’t perfect. You have to love them anyway, even when they’re unlovable.

Sound advice that I’ve tried to live by for years.

I haven’t watched Meet the Robinsons, but this animated gif alone makes me want to watch it just because dinosaurs make me smile — and also because I have a big head and little arms. (gif via)

Funny or Die got Jewel to dress up in a disguise and go sing some of her own songs at a karaoke bar. Instant classic.

This was all kinds of wonderful and smile-inducing.

Not going to lie, this made me say “aaaw.” Granted, it’s not the way I’d propose, but it’s still cute nonetheless.
