100 Foods to Try Before You Die
Christina recently posted a list of 100 foods you should try before you die. As someone that loves food (you can tell by the size of my stomach) and loves lists and loves memes, it only made sense that I post the list here with an indication of which ones I have tried, and which ones you need to invite me out to dinner for in the next little while.
(Things I have tried are in bold. My occasional comments — and several inside jokes — in italics.)
Venison (Served curried at a game reserve on top of a mountain in Mauritius. Le yum.)
Nettle tea
Huevos rancheros
Steak tartare (If you get the chance, get the tartare at La Rotonde in Paris. So good.)
Crocodile
Black pudding
Cheese fondue
Carp
Borscht
Baba ghanoush
Calamari
Pho
PB&J sandwich (One of my favorite things in the world.)
Aloo gobi
Hot dog from a street cart (Toronto has the best street meat ever. No competition.)
Epoisses
Black truffle
Fruit wine made from something other than grapes
Steamed pork buns
Pistachio ice cream
Heirloom tomatoes
Fresh wild berries (Remind me to tell you about my encounter with a wild monkey in a gooseberry tree in Uganda some time.)
Foie gras
Rice and beans (Staple food growing up. Also, ugali.)
Brawn, or head cheese
Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper
Dulce de leche
Oysters (What? Oyster shake? I know Iris and Amber are shaking their heads at this one.)
Baklava
Bagna cauda
Wasabi peas
Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl
Salted lassi
Sauerkraut
Root beer float
Cognac with a fat cigar (Um, heaven?)
Clotted cream tea
Vodka jelly/Jell-O shot
Gumbo
Oxtail (Reminds me of summer and roti.)
Curried goat (Also reminds me of summer and roti.)
Whole insects (Yes, there’s a story behind this one. Now is not the time to tell it.)
Phaal
Goat’s milk
Single malt whisky (Isn’t this one of the food groups?)
Fugu
Chicken tikka masala
Eel (Unagi = amazing.)
Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut
Sea urchin
Prickly pear
Umeboshi
Abalone
Paneer
McDonald’s Big Mac Meal
Spaetzle
Dirty gin martini
Beer above 8% ABV
Poutine (Hey Iris, how about another trip to Smoke’s?)
Carob chips
S’mores
Sweetbreads
Kaolin
Currywurst
Durian
Frogs’ legs
Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake (Every summer in middle school and high school: season pass to Canada’s Wonderland for roller coasters and funnel cakes and cute girls who had no interest in me whatsoever.)
Haggis
Fried plantain
Chitterlings, or andouillette
Gazpacho
Caviar and blini
Louche absinthe (Let’s not bring up the crazy things that happen after absinthe parties, okay?)
Gjetost, or brunost
Roadkill
Baijiu
Hostess Fruit Pie
Snail
Lapsang souchong
Bellini
Tom yum
Eggs Benedict (Breakfast. Almost every Sunday.)
Pocky
Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant (Been to a few. Among my favorites: Aqua, Fat Duck, Le Cinq, Alain Ducasse, Ishikawa, and De Karmeliet.)
Kobe beef
Hare
Goulash
Flowers (Take young dandelion buds and fry them in butter and then put them on your steak. Trust me.)
Horse
Criollo
Spam (In my inbox, in my stomach.)
Soft shell crab
Rose harissa
Catfish (Almost had a catfish burrito with Lara a few weeks ago after we were craving fish tacos, but ended up going with a three-bean burrito instead. But catfish is still good.)
Mole poblano
Bagel and lox (Breakfast. Almost every Saturday.)
Lobster Thermidor
Polenta
Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee
Snake
Yeah, I enjoy eating.
