I wasn’t an OiNK user, but today’s news of the popular music sharing website being taken down has been all over the internet. The most interesting piece of writing I’ve found on today’s developments has been from a musician (DJ Rapture) whose music was being shared on the site without his explicit permission. Rapture says:
“About a week after I shipped out orders of the first live CD-r Andy Moor & I did, it appeared on Oink. Someone who had purchased it directly from me turned around and posted it online, for free. I wasn’t mad, I was just more stunned by the reach… and usefulness of the site.”
His entire blog post is definitely worth a read. If only every musician (or music industry executive) thought the way he did, we would have had a new economic model for the music industry a long time ago that could have avoided such debacles like the shutting down of OiNK.
