The New York Times Magazine’s food issue has a great feature called “Rules to Eat By” that features tips on eating and living from the magazine’s readers. There are a lot of gems in the interactive feature, but the one I’ve included above is my favorite, because it meshes with my belief that every meal should be eaten with a focus on the meal, and not on the other distractions around us:
“When drinking tea, just drink tea.” I find this Zen teaching useful, given my inclination toward information absorption in the morning, when I’m also trying to eat breakfast, get the dog out, start the fire and organize my day. I believe that it’s so much better for our bodies when we are present to our food.
Check out the full interactive feature for more gems like, “Don’t eat egg salad from a vending machine,” and “don’t eat anything that took more energy to ship than to grow.”
