A passing comment by a friend from a conversation I had last week:
“It’s hard to show people that you love them. There’s only so much you can do.”
I didn’t respond to the comment in that conversation, mainly because it was late and I was exhausted and I just wanted to go home, but it’s obvious that the comment was ludicrous: there are innumerable ways to show someone that you love them.
What some people forget, I think, is that love isn’t always manifested in extravagant public displays; not every display of affection belongs in a romance movie. Sometimes the most important, most impactful, most honest, most selfless thing you can do to show someone that you love them is to simply be present, to care about them, to make sure that they know, in some small way, that they can share the little things in their lives with you, good and bad.
