Say what you want about Benazir Bhutto (and I know she wasn’t all too popular in some parts) but you have to admit that her assassination this morning is bad news. Not only will this clearly undermine any plans for reconciliation in Pakistan, but will also give Musharraf an easy reason for not holding elections early in 2008.
I could see that Bhutto wasn’t the best option to lead Pakistan in the next few years, but she was at least an option. Her assassination will undoubtedly lead to the silencing of other voices of dissent, and is a bad omen for the future of actual political debate in Pakistan.
While I could point you to some more mainstream news stories on the subject, I thought it might be interesting to see what the common folk are saying on the subject.
There is, of course, the standard BBC, CNN, CBC, and NYT coverage to check out as well.
