I grew up idolizing The New Yorker. Heck, while everyone was dreaming of being a firefighter or astronaut, one of my childhood dreams was to be a staff writer for the magazine.
I know The New Yorker is far from perfect. In fact, in the past few years, I have been coming up with ideas for the perfect magazine. And then one day, I picked up Monocle and realized that it had hit on most of those points quite well.
So if I were to start a magazine, I’d be a bit of an emulator. I’d take all the great content and design Monocle, acquire the excellent regular features of The New Yorker, and then remove half the advertising. Just half. I need to make money somehow, right?
