I took a trip to the post office this morning to send a little card and photo print to Canada through ExpressMail and was greeted by Alan and his coworkers with a bit of a frown. Turns out they heard that I was moving away at the end of the week, and were sad to see me go. I’ll miss them.
Howard, one of the security guards at the building where I work, called out to a few of his other fellow security guards as I walked into the building: “Hey, did you all know Vasta’s leaving in a week?” He had heard the news, and told me that he’s sad to see me go. I’ll miss him and the whole staff.
At the cafeteria this afternoon, Emma and some of the other cafeteria workers gave me hugs and shook my hand. They too, had heard that I was moving back to Toronto and expressed sorrow that I wouldn’t be seeing them regularly anymore. I’ll miss all of them, a whole lot.
I’m not sure how they all found out that I was leaving — some of the people I work with (not closely, of course) still don’t know about my impending move — but it was nice to know that all these people, people who touch my heart regularly and fill my every day with small joys, noticed me too, even in a small way.
I’ll miss a lot of things about DC, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’ll miss the people the most.
