Blahoo.

Yahoo!’s been falling apart recently, but through it all, I still held hope for the company.

Until they fired George Oates.

Any goodwill I may have had towards Yahoo! has now completely disappeared. I am considering not renewing my Flickr account and shutting down my (largely unused) del.icio.us and Upcoming accounts completely.

The worst part of it all was the way it was handled. From George’s blog post:

Sent a quick, unsatisfying goodbye to the team. I watched as my access to various parts of the guts of Flickr fell away. I noticed how naturally I searched for any and all bits I could think of, just in the hope that it still existed. But no. I was shut out entirely within about 14 hours of the phone call.

This kind of treatment to anyone would be despicable, but it’s even worse when you remember that George was the key person responsible for the best thing that Flickr (and Yahoo! in general) has done since its inception.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around all of this, but needless to say I’m upset. George, I’m wishing you nothing but the best to get through this tumultuous period and come out not only unscathed, but stronger.
