Allow me to gush about my friend Amy Kathryn Taylor.
Amy lives on the west coast of Canada, and I’ve “known” her for the past two years. To be honest, I’ve never actually met her in person. I originally met her on Flickr (she’s an amazing photographer) and since then we’ve corresponded regularly, I’ve hung out with her older sister Sarah (also an amazing, wonderful person) and we keep trying to make plans to meet each other that don’t ever really work out.
Even though we only know each other online, Amy’s always been remarkably prescient when it comes to knowing how I’m feeling. On days when I’m feeling low, I can always expect to get a letter, email, or call from her. On the good days, she’s always around to share in my joy. We exchange books through the post, and she sends me the most amazing pieces of art. (Did I mention that she was a fantastic artist on top of being a great photographer?)
People often say that friendships that you make online aren’t “real” or don’t mean as much as friendships that you foster offline. Having Amy as a friend makes me realize that it doesn’t matter where you met or how you correspond; what really matters in any friendship is the connection you create and the care you have for the other person.
All that to say Amy, I know you’re probably never going to read this, but thanks for being a great friend.
